Coverage Areas: Lexington, KY Urban Service Area (streets, zip codes); Fayette County, KY (major roads, zip codes)

Publisher: Bowling Green Area Chamber Of Commerce
Cartographer: Target Marketing, Inc.
Coverage Areas: Bowling Green, KY (streets)
Insets: Downtown Bowling Green, KY; Western Kentucky University Campus
Comments: Target Marketing also did the Louisville C.o.C. street map, and it uses the same computer-generated style, though this one inexplicably shows 4-digit route markets. I'm not qualified to ascertain this map's accuracy.
How to acquire this map: details are available on a separate page. Select ``Chamber Publications'' from the menu.
Publisher: Transit Authority of River City
Cartographer: Nelson Mapping Services
Coverage Areas: Louisville, KY (major roads, bus routes); Downtown Louisville, KY (streets, bus routes)
Comments: I found at least 20 minor errors in this map, all of which have been submitted by email to tarc@aye.net; also it was already slightly out of date when it was published (it did not show the Route 59 extension to downtown or the Route 17 express routing via I-264 and I-65). A comparison between this map and the 1989 issue, which use vastly different cartography, is available.

Publisher: Louisville Area Chamber Of Commerce (now Greater Louisville, Inc.)
Cartographer: Target Marketing, Inc.
Coverage Areas: Jefferson County, KY (streets)
Comments: This computer-generated map was way out of date in 1997. The I-264/I-65/KY 61/SDF/KFEC interchange exemplifies this. It does not show 4-digit state highway markers, either. Universal Map also puts its brand on this map while other cities get the privilege of having Universal actually do their cartography for them. A new edition of this map was made available in August 2000, which still contains most of the flaws, but fixes a few of them.

Despite a few minor flaws, this is one of the nicer and more colorful computer-generated maps I've ever seen. Completely covers the counties of Kenton, Boone, Gallatin, Grant, Pendleton, Bracken, and Campbell.

Coverage Areas: Louisville, KY (streets)
Insets: Jefferson County, KY (major roads)
Comments: It was on this map that I discovered something that might shed some light on why a certain highway in Jefferson County is called Outer Loop. The county road map shows a proposed ``cross-county road'' that clockwise starts at US 42 and ends just past Bardstown Road, connecting with the then-existing Cross-County Road (KY 1065). The portion of the route (KY 841) between US 42 and Bardstown Road remained pretty much the same, but the plans since changed and the route was diverted south of the Cross-County Road and was eventually completed a couple decades later as the Gene Snyder Freeway, but the existing Cross-County Road was renamed Outer Loop anyway. Go figure. As of 1963 the portion of the freeway between Shelbyville Road and I-64 was already complete, and was marked on this map as Outer Loop. I like making lame jokes every once in a while about the Outer Loop, signed as KY 1065, almost becoming I-1065, except that four-digit state highway numbers in urban areas are more a formality than anything else. :)

Comments: This is more a novelty item. I picked this copy up at the restaurant off I-77 on Arlington Road just south of Akron, OH, basically because it looked like a map and I noticed it was. This map highlights locations of Bob Evans restaurants. Ohio is the only state that has a specific inset, and the Ohio cities share a separate section with it. It also seems to have the highest concentration of restaurants, state-wide. This is probably because Bob Evans was founded somewhere in Ohio. There is also a cluster in the Washington/Baltimore/Harrisburg/Philidelphia corridor. Florida, Indiana, and Michigan also have quite a few. City inset maps are the same as they appear in the National Geographic Road Atlas.

Comments: Cartography from this map is now used in the Commercial Survey Company's products, the famous red books covering northeastern Ohio. The folded-book form that seems to be unique to SOHIO maps in the early- and mid-20th century is quite a handy form: less unwieldy than your traditional folded up big sheet of paper as which most maps manifest themselves, and still fits in the glove compartment. I wish map companies would use this form today, and am surprised they didn't use it back then. Perhaps covered by patent?

Comments: Ohio Turnpike is marked I-80S. I-90 and portions of I-71 shown as under construction. Metropolitan population listed as 2,047,000. One rather unusual aspect of this map is that north doesn't point straight ``up'' on the sheet. It has St. Clair and Lakeland Freeway running east-west on the paper. I've seen this characterized on some downtown inset maps, but not complete city/county street maps.

Comments: Includes a neat checkerboard map of the States that can be used to estimate the number of days your automobile trip from one city to another will take. An inset contains a couple paragraphs describing the new Interstate highway system, reproduced below (all typos mine): A NEW SYMBOL ON OUR HIGHWAYS This route marker represents our rapidly growing 41,000-mile National System of Interstate and Defense Highways. This completely new road system offers a safe, high-speed network of controlled-access highways with bypasses around or expressways through all cities and towns en route. It will change our historic travel patterns radically in many cases. Driving time for many trips will be cut in half and it will save thousands of lives each year. Now about 40% complete nationally, it is expected that the system will be half finished late in 1964. Many important urban expressways are or soon will be in use, and longer connected sections in rural areas are opening each month. Completion nation-wide is expected in 1972, much earlier in several states. More than 2,000 miles of toll roads will be included in the system. These new route markers are shown [I-95 SHIELD] on this map. Federal aid for Interstate construction amounts to about 90% of the total cost, and this comes entirely from Federal highway-user taxes. The remaining 10% is contributed by the stats. No Federal funds will be used to pay for maintenance of the system.

Comments: Louisville has finally been converted to the new colorful digital cartography. There's nothing great about it, really! Unfortunately this is not the most accurate map of Louisville available; already I've found many minor mistakes. However it's nice that they're using actual longitude and latitude coordinates as the grid now. I did notice that the grid is rotated slightly so that up on the paper is slighty west of north. However, it does have the largest coverage area other than Mapsco. I'm going to miss the old Gousha cartography. Sigh.
