The route was along I-65 to TN 155 north of Nashville (AAA told me
to take this detour due to construction in Nashville) to I-24 to I-75
to the interchange complex with I-285 and US 41 near Smyrna, where the
conference site and the hotel I spent three nights at were. I left
Wednesday afternoon the 11th and came back Saturday night the 14th.
The photos were taken with a Sony Mavica FD-83 digital camera. The
camera was mounted on the dashboard using duct tape for most of these.

least three lanes in each direction between Louisville and

After getting off at the US 62 exit to eat at Burger King (the
same restaurant I ate at last year on my trip to the ALS
conference), I took a photo or two as I was getting back onto
65. This is a sign assembly on US 62 eastbound in
Elizabethtown, approaching I-65.

TN 155, the Briley Parkway, is a classic example of a highway
that changes from limited-access to full-access a couple times,
much like New Circle Road (KY 4) in Lexington, KY. This photo
shows a green sign for a numbered Exit 5 and a stoplight at the
same time, within a few hundred feet of eachother!

I-24 eastbound from Nashville, driving away from the sun as it
is setting. I really like this photo except the shutter speed
should have been faster like some of the earlier daytime
photos I took. There's no explicit way to control it with the
camera I was using, it apparently adjusts automatically to the
light, but it was the best I could do at night.

BGS for I-75 southbound, exit 345 in Georgia, located a few
miles south of the GA-TN border, for US 41 and US 76. I'm sorry
the quality of this photo isn't that great.
Exit 345 is one of the new milepost-based exit numbers on
Interstate highways in Georgia. Exit numbers were changed in
2000; before then Georgia was probably one of the last remaining
states to use sequential exit numbers on their freeways. This
sign is also a typical example of the use of Series D with
lowercase letters on Big Green Signs in Georiga. The Federal
Highway Administration's ``Standard Alphabets for Highway
Signs'' does not specify lowercase letters for Series D or
anything else except Series E Modified. Some out-of-state
drivers accustomed to the use of Series E Modified on BGSs in
other states (``road geeks'' in particular) will notice the
different typeface; a few even mistake it for Clearview, the
typeface under development by the Pennsylvania Transportation
Institute. I've also seen Series D with lowercase letters used
on larger street signs in Louisville and some other cities. I
also just now noticed that they don't dot their i's.
