This page contains a sour mash of photos I took from Downtown Louisville the night of 1 December 2000 and the afternoon of 2 December.

Finally, I managed to take a good photo of lighted trees! This is Fourth Avenue just north of Broadway near Theatre Square and the former Ohio Theatre.

Fourth Avenue, looking north towards the Palace Theatre and the Louisville Galleria. At least the Galleria looks nice at night.

Once known as the Electric Building, another one of those buildings on Fourth Avenue that got abandoned in the 1980s, it was purchased by Louisville's Public Radio Partnership to house its three radio stations. Soon after the building was purchased it was almost destroyed by fire. Fortunately they were able to have it remodeled. I donated $65 or so towards their Capital Campaign.

We are near the intersection of Fourth and Chestnut, looking north. Darn street lights!

I can assure you that the light coming from the trees isn't as bright and bleeding as this photo would have you believe. Jefferson Street between 4th and 5th.

This starts a batch of photos taken on the cold Saturday afternoon of 3 December 2000. The first three were taken at a high exposure setting before I realized the error of my ways. These photos are from Market Street between 12th and 13th, in an industrial zone west of Downtown Louisville. In particular this makes it look like the skies were foggier than they really were.

The Ninth Street (Roy Wilkins Avenue) interchange is an older example of the Semi-Directional T, including a reasonably high flyover that makes for some nice photos.

The last batch of Transit Authority of River City buses to feature their classic but dull paint scheme of two red lines is 38 Flxible Metros from 1994 like this one. TARC would have bought more but Flxible went out of business.

Along West Main Street in Louisville is the world's second largest collection of cast-iron buildings (if my information is correct), most of which are preserved. This is the back of the collection of buildings on the south side of the 700 block.

The same collection of buildings is on the left. Some of Louisville's skyline is in the background. I think what's being built at 7th and Market is a parking garage.

Some brick alleys actually still exist in Downtown but don't look to be well-maintained. Louisville actually has a few brick streets as well which appear to be better maintained than this alley.

Louisville and some other cities have fleets of buses that look like trolleys. Some people call them trolleys but I call them trolley replicas because they are not trolleys! The Transit Authority of River City calls them the Toonerville II Trolleys, naming them after a comic strip. This vehicle is part of a small fleet of trolleys purchased last year. We still have some slightly smaller ``trolleys'' from 1987 (those have the back open to the outside) when the project started. Rides on these coaches are free to passengers since Downtown businesses help to subsidize them.

Construction is currently in progress on a new building at 628 West Main Street. 626 West Main Street, whose wall is visble on the left, is also being rehabilitated for retail space (and a steak house restaurant!); and 630(?) (wall on the right) was recently remodeled and is now the location of some corporate offices of Brown-Forman.
